Yola çıkmadan iki gün önce Celal Bayar’a şunları söylemişti: “Benim, kırk asırlık Türk yurdu, Hatay esir kalamaz dediğimi unutmuş olanlar olabilir. Ama ben unutmadım, unutamam,
sen de unutamazsın”.

What Christmas means to me

Just a few days missing and the biggest and nicest fiest is coming to our households. What is Ramazan for Turkish, that is Christmas (or if u like X-mas) for most of the families in my homeland. I will give you an idea, how real Christmas in my family looks like. I don´t mean the one which had started in many shopping malls or TV promotions 2 months ago. This is, in my opinion, degradation of the most beautiful religious holiday in the year. False Santa Claus who promises discounts and gifts for the children is not the sense of it all.

Christmas Eve is the most important day for the Christians worldwide. This day we should be fasting until dinner, however, small breakfast is allowed. After waking up all the family members try to be close to mum, who is the chef and gives orders about helping in the kitchen, decorating the flat or just going to the supermarket to buy  some trifles she had forgotten in the morning shopping. In my family the X-mas tree is made one day in advance. Me and my sister decorate it with coloured embellishment, lights and also sweets. We construct little stony Betlehem (a stall with set of pieces – Jesus child, his parents St. Mary and Joseph and shepherds) which is named after the city in Israel where Christ was born.

Until we start cooking the dinner, we are watching popular Christmas Tales on TV. Although they broadcast the same fairy tales for many years, we are not bored of them because we got used to them like a baby accustoms to walk or speak. After that we are preparing traditional potato salad with eggs, peas, corn and mayonnaise, that needs to stay in the fridge at least 2-3 hours to have a right taste. The menu consists of starter, soup, main dish and fruit at the end. Dinner starts always at six. At the beginning we shortly pray together, sing a carol and clink with the glass of aperitif. We start with typical waffer rolls filled with garlic and honey. It is said we will be healthy all the year after eating this. Next course is thick mushroom soup, always made of Boletus reticulatus. It is the most common and tasty mushroom in Slovakia, that we get from my grandmother every year. After that, above mentioned potato salad is served with fried fish fillets. As a drink we usually have red wine with coke. Finally we eat fruit. Apples, oranges and pears are cut into four peaces for all of us, we also eat exotic fruits like dates and figs.

After having a final prayer we go to the living room, where our X-mas presents are already waiting for us. We unwrap the boxes and enjoy the gifts from our family, trying T-shirts and sweaters, that are never missing under the tree. A classical movie follows and at 23:30 we are leaving for the midnight festive Mass in the church. We enjoy X-mas also from the spiritual side and after coming back home and lying to the bed we can not asleep for a long time because of thinking how special and magic day it was.

Hereby I would like to wish Merry Christmas and happy new year to all the readers! MUTLU NOELLER, arkadaşlar!
