Yola çıkmadan iki gün önce Celal Bayar’a şunları söylemişti: “Benim, kırk asırlık Türk yurdu, Hatay esir kalamaz dediğimi unutmuş olanlar olabilir. Ama ben unutmadım, unutamam,
sen de unutamazsın”.

My turkish reflexion

Before coming to Turkey I actually knew only turkish clichés. Some kinds of kebabs (I knew döner and dürüm, but without any idea which one is rolled and which not), then Hagia Sofia and a few football clubs that people in the „half-moon country“ love. I also knew the predominant religion is Islam, but I had almost no idea about its principles.

Everybody knows right Muslim prays five times a day in a mosque and some people in Europe are a bit scared of it (in the „old“ continent many people, unfortunatelly, think Turkey looks like Middle East countries from the evening news – it means there are some bombs and suicide attacks etc.)  In my home country don´t live any Turkish people, except some guys having a small restaurants with kebab, so my first real contact with the country came after landing at Sabiha Gökçen in Istanbul. My friend who spent many days on the road in this region told me about Turkish hospitality. Our nation is also famous for this feature so I was very curious about comparing it.

Now after  two months I must admit people here are incredibly nice and helpful and you are better in this. I don´t know how about local people, but for instance, when we were at the market for the first time, the salesmen, hearing our English, presented us some vegetables and fruits.Just because of the fact we were new in the city and he wanted to make us pleasure.

Later we visited some of our friends´ houses and their mothers prepared us such a good breakfasts we will remember it for years. Or lately a guy on the bus gave us some nuts without saying a word (most probably he didn´t know any English word). On the other hand, although mainly young people are not very religious, they are surrounded by something that they can not completely ignore. I think that si the big difference between people from Europe and Turkish. Lack of travelling causes a lack of information and the foreign language skills of the Turkish are poor. I met some students who tried an Erasmus programe and all of them told me it really changed their lifes in a positive way. Turkish are really nice and hospitable, but what they need if they want to join the community is to work really hard on this. We will root for them J.
